40 Awesome Marketing Tweets From 2011

best marketing tweets“These are a few of my favorite things…” Now that you have that song in your head, let me tell you a little bit about how I come up with some of my blog content.

I try to follow as many really interesting people who write about (or simply share) interesting stuff in the world of B2B Marketing. And when I see a topic that I think I could cover in a new or fun or exciting way, I write about it.

That’s it. I don’t have a fancy editorial calendar. I never write more than a day or two ahead. I just write about whatever marketing challenge hits me in the forehead at that moment.

Most of the time, the topic comes to me because I saw a tweet or read a post that I thought was really interesting. I usually ReTweet it and some very special few, get “Favorited.” Here is my 2011 list of favorite tweets.

78 Tweetable Moments From Social Media Plus #SMPlus

Returning from a conference I always have that crazy buzzing going on in my head. You hear so many great stories, meet so many great people and then I always try to spend some time processing it all and deciding what actions I am going to take.

This week I attended the Social Media Plus conference in downtown Philadelphia, PA and for the second year in a row, the organizers of the event did an amazing job bringing together some of the best minds in social media in both the speakers and the attendees.

As I have done in the past, I like to summarize my top picks for the most “tweetable moments” that sum up the main takeaways or “notes” for the show so that even if you couldn’t attend, you can gain from the insights we all heard.

In my mind the show was best summarized by Joel Cheesman @joelcheesman and Elizabeth Miller @elizabethnow in these quotes:

  • Help People
  • Serve. Don’t Sell

But read on and hear the 78 Most Tweetable moments from over 40 social media rock stars…

B2B Marketers Need To Wake Up and Get Social

A year ago, Forrester released their CMO Mandate: Adapt or Perish where they spoke about the large number of CMOs who are seeking to transform their upended marketing organizations in 2011.

The reason for this change agenda, they said, was due to the havoc being brought by a combination of technology-empowered buyers, old-school marketing mindsets and the rush to outsource digital and content marketing to fill the gap created by their own team’s outdated skills.

But now, it is one year later, and a number of recent reports paint a picture  of slowing progress, even some reversals, begging  the question: have B2B Marketers adapted or are we ready to perish?

7 Ideas To Increase Your Twitter Followers

All over the world, Twitter is getting more and more popular every day. Once a site for developers and bloggers, Twitter has hit the mainstream of news, politics, sports and entertainment.

That popularity affects the number of registered Twitter users and now Twitter has more than 200 million of them.

That introduction should be enough to show the “big potential” of that “small” micro-blogging platform. Now the main question for Twitter users is, how can we differentiate our self with 140 characters and what should we do to use Twitter effectively?

Here is a slideshare presentation from SAP’s most popular Twitter user, Ali Rıza BABAOĞLAN (@alibabaoglan), a Key Accounts Manager from our Turkish Public Sector group. In the presentation, Ali provides 7 ideas to increase your Twitter followers. At first I thought this might be just for beginners but even those of us who have been using Twitter for some time can benefit from Ali’s insights.

Why We Need More Social And Less Marketing

Social. Digital. Content. Inbound Marketing. Community.

These are the words that swirl around in my head all day long and fly-by on my Twitter feed.

And while there are plenty of big thinkers who are debating the semantics, I am concerned about driving real change in business. To me, marketing’s main goal is to advocate for customers. To make sure that our business solutions reflect the real needs of our customers.

But “how we get there” and “what we call it” are less important than achieving the goal. So what can we tell our business leaders that will help to make the impact real for them?

Social Media Measurement – Would You Still Do It If There Was No ROI?

There has been plenty of debate about the ROI of social media. And just before my friend Eric Wittlake went on vacation this week, he stoked my creative juices once again with this thought-provoking post about social media measurement.

To summarize, the CMO of Kmart stated that TV is easier to measure than Social Media.  Eric agrees with him and disagrees with a Jay Baer tweet that suggests Kmart just “try harder.”

In the post “What’s Your ROI?“ I suggested that marketers should be using Revenue, Pipeline Value and Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) as measures of how the total marketing spend delivers a quantifiable return. But these measures can be hard to track at the program, channel or tactic level.

OK, so maybe social media efforts are hard to measure, but even if they have little or no immediate ROI, would you still do social media? Eric asked me to comment, so here is my verbatim reply…
